McCall-Smith on Reader Expectations

April 17, 2009

The Wall Street Journal recently published an essay by Alexander McCall-Smith about “the intense personal relationships readers form with characters and the ways that complicates the lives of authors.” McCall-Smith ought to know whereof he speaks: he’s written more than 60 novels, including the popular “No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency” series that was recently made into a cable television film.

Read the essay, entitled “Lost in Fiction.”

April 15, 2009

An inspiring – and, as with most things Woolfish, an exquisitely crafted – essay reprinted earlier this year in The Guardian.
